Your Bag is Empty

Using candles may seem like an overly simple task. There’s not much to do, after all—just burn it and go, right? Not exactly. Believe it or not, there’s a proper and wrong way to take care of your candles.

You may have hopped aboard the candle craze train to invest in your own set of fruity and flowery scents, but your obligations as a candle owner go beyond just that. You want to keep your collection in tip-top shape.

Thankfully, developing a routine that helps you take care of your candles is easy to do. Candles should be regarded as mere decor products, especially since they hold greater potential.

When used with intention, your candles can transform your room into a relaxing environment, one that keeps the stress of life away. It only follows to take good care of them—they run out rather quickly, after all. Shouldn’t fleeting things be treated with extra love and care? Here’s how to get it right:

Tip #1: Burn your candle right the first time

Although you may be eager to use your new candle, it’s essential to get the first burn right. It will set the tone for the rest of its life, so make sure to burn it for a while. You want to make sure that the entire surface melts before putting it out.

Failure to do so means a rim of solid wax that will never melt. This occurrence is known as tunneling, which essentially destroys the quality of your candles. The process takes at least an hour for the entire surface to burn evenly—it’s best to wait! If you don’t have the time, however, make sure to only use your new candle when you do. Sampling won’t be worth it—trust us.

Tip #2: Keep your candle as clean as possible

Fire comes with soot and other debris, which builds up inside the candle’s container over time. Using the candle several times will cause gunk to form, so make sure to clean it out. Any debris left could end up being ignited alongside the wick, which can produce multiple flames. Unfortunately, this causes the candle to overheat—setting the entire surface aflame. Here’s how to get your cleaning session right:

  • Use tweezers for trimmings and debris
  • Get a dry towel to wipe fingerprints, soot, and other gunk off the container (Inside and out!)

Tip #3: Trim the wick regularly

If you want a clean and even burn, you only need to practice a simple task—trimming the wick before lighting. Doing so ensures that the candle wick is at the right length, ensuring that the flame stays nice and stable. You may want to use a wick trimmer for this part, but a sharp pair of scissors can do the trick. Fair warning, though: don’t cut it too short! You’ll end up losing the wick in melted wax.

The Bottom Line

To others, lighting up a candle may not seem like much. But if you’re one of the few who find meaning and comfort in each scent and fluttering warmth, a candle will be so much more. For this reason, you’ll want to develop a care routine that makes your candles last longer. Although fleeting, it’s possible to make the most of your experience. Make sure to keep these tips in mind!
